Like so many in the small world of philanthropy I was saddened to learn of Vartan Gregorian’s passing today, April 16, 2021. I would see him several times a year, at a workshop, gala, for a drink or a meeting in his office. I was one of many who felt mentored by Vartan through the years.

Many will remember Franklin Thomas as the president of Ford Foundation, fewer will realize that he was the first Black foundation president in America, but I knew him as my boss and mentor. The first is something that perplexed me at the time, which I have come to understand more and more through the years. Negotiate, I did not.
