Even though I don’t plan to use subcontractors for grant writing purposes, I’ve contracted a virtual assistant with design skills to help develop templates and workbooks. There’s no doubt that independent grant writers and grant writing firms are on the rise. There's always a way to be more efficient.

I don’t mean to infer that reading grants is boring, and I’m not promoting performance-enhancing drugs. I’ve written grants, primarily federal grants, for more than 30 years, but my love is creative writing. Some might see creative writing as antithetical to federal grant writing.

Certified Grants Management Specialist (CGMS) There are just over 300 CGMS professionals at the end of 2023; only five have also received their GPC, including two AGS staff. The application phase is often the focus of our work as grant professionals. There are 474 GPCs worldwide; including 19 AGS employees (and counting!)

I recently participated in a Federal grant review panel for the Department of Education that included ten complex applications with detailed rubrics and a series of 2-3 hour panel discussions over 15 days, including weekends and holidays. Grant writing is not a solo sport.
