Candid is the largest source of data about the demographics of nonprofit leaders, board members, and staff. Candid typically shares organizations’ “latest available” demographic data, i.e., their most recent submission. The low figure for 2019 is due in part to the fact that data collection began only in July of that year.

I was also interested to learn that 40% of foundation leaders interviewed said they have begun or are increasingly focused on better collecting and using demographic data about nonprofits they fund and the people they serve. I am a firm believer in collecting demographic data. Of course, it is possible for both things to be true.

Candid began collecting demographic data from nonprofit organizations in July 2019, encouraging them to share information on their leadership, staff, and board members on their nonprofit profiles. Among organizations that did not share demographic data, 65% were unaware that this section of their profile was incomplete.
