When we dig a bit deeper into the data, it becomes clear that a significant portion of that activity was driven by donor-advised funds (DAFs) hosted by community foundations. In 2022, when both contributions to the funds and their investment returns declined, DAF account holders continued to recommend grants.

Many of the findings were as expected: Nonprofits continue to struggle to find the funds to do their jobs. Large grant awards come from the government. More grant awards are made by private foundations. Government grants are increasingly more difficult to secure. More organizations are applying for grants than in previous years.
